Electric billing is based on consumption so the less that is used the smaller your monthly bill will be. Natchez Trace EPA takes great care to keep our electric rates as low as possible, but we can’t control consumption. Simple lifestyle changes and investments in your home will help to keep your energy consumption low.
Top 10 Tips
Here are our top 10 tips to control consumption:
- Set your thermostat at 78 degrees during the summer and 68 degrees during the winter. This small adjustment will take a large portion of the load off of your cooling and heating systems.
- Replace your old light bulbs with LEDs. LEDs only use 30% of the energy that old lighting required.
- Make sure your house is sealed. All doorways and windows should be maintained in a way that prevents your internal air from escaping.
- Check your duct work. Your unit works hard to heat and cool your home, but if air is escaping through your duct work then you aren’t receiving the benefit of what you’re paying for.
- Use shades or drapes on your windows to further insulate your home from the outside environment.
- Have your HVAC inspected annually to ensure that your system is running with the proper amount of coolant and that your heating unit is running efficiently.
- Your water heater should be set no higher than 120 F.
- Avoid heating your home with space heaters. These units are energy hogs and can cost you as much as $100 per unit a month to run.
- Use new appliances. Appliances don’t typically consume large amounts of power, but every step you take to reducing your consumption will help. New appliances are typically more efficient than what you purchased 10 years ago.
- Keep your air filters clean. A clean path means that your central unit won’t have to work as hard to move air throughout your home.
